Seasonal changes in wind direction associated with large landmasses and adjacent water bodies are called monsoons.

Monsoons are strong prevailing winds that are associated with regions where most rain falls during a particular season. Monsoons usually blow from cold to warm regions and they determine the climate (dry and wet seasons) throughout most of the tropical regions. The onset of a monsoon is usually followed by heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms.
