Explanation:

Given : Jimmy receives his first 3 video games free .

After that he pays $50 for each game.

To Find : Is the amount of money he spends on video games proportional to the number of games he owns?

Solution :

Let total no. of games he own = x

Out of x games 3 games are free of cost

Thus the no. of games for which he paid = x-3

Cost of 1 game is $50

Cost of (x-3) games = y = 50(x-3)

Thus total amount y = 50 (x-3) = 50x - 150 ---(a)

Now to check the proportionality

Condition of proportionality : y ∝ x

⇒y = k x

Compare (a) with the condition we can see that it is not in the general form of proportionality which is given above . Since (a) ha s constant -150.

Thus , the amount of money he spends on video games is not proportional to the number of games he owns
