From the beginning of the exploitation of the western land until present day, it systematically was destroying the environment and had devastating effect on it. The timber industry, gold mining, and oil extraction, all contributed to cleaning up the terrain from the forests. Further on, it polluted the soils, and also resulted in heavy erosion of them.
