In 1433, neo-Confucian factions within the Ming court instituted an overtly isolationist policy that was to characterized China's trade policy into the 18th century. By this time, however, the Ming Chinese had colonized neighboring Annam, and established permanent commercial diaspora communities in Southeast Asia.
