y = -x + 2 (a)

y = 3x + 2 (b)

First express both equations in the form ax+by= c

x+y = 2 (a)

-3x+y = 2 (b)

Then subtract (b) to (a) to eliminate y

x + y = 2

-

-3x + y = 2

___________

4x = 0

Solve for x

x=0/4

x= 0

Replace x on any original equation and solve for y:

x+y= 2

0+y=2

y=2

Solution:

x=0

y=2
