Let, the water capcity of tank = x

it would be x*3/4 = 42

x = 42*4 / 3 = 168/3 = 56

So, the tank can hold up to 56 gallons

Answer:

67.2 gallons

Explanation:

Given: A water tank is
(1)/(8) full. the tank is
(3)/(4) full when
42 gallons of water are added to the tank.

To Find: how much water can the tank hold.

Solution:

let total capacity of tank be
=\text{t}

initially water in tank
=(1)/(8)\text{t}

amount of water added in tank
=42
\text{gallons}

water in tank after more water is added
=(3)/(4)\text{t}

now,

water added in tank
=(\text{water in tank after more water is added})-(\text{initial amount of water})

(3)/(4)\text{t}-(1)/(8)\text{t}

(6)/(8)-(1)/(8)

(5)/(8)\text{t}

water added in tank
=42
\text{gallons}

(5)/(8)\text{t}=42

\text{t}=(42*8)/(5)

\text{t}=67.2
\text{gallons}

tank can hold
67.2
\text{gallons} of water
