the rise is the number from one point to another,
ex:
(2,4) and (3,7)
what you would do to find the rise/slope is
7-4=?
3-2=?
this is because to find the rise/slope is to use the equation.

slope=(y2-y1) and (x2-x1)
in this example (2,4) is (x1,y2) and (3,7) is (x2,y2)
so
7-4=3
3-2=1
then you divide
3/1=3
so in the equation 3 is the rise/slope.

hope this helps, this is from my notes I took in class.
