x² - 4x + 6 = 0
x² - 2x = - 6 + (- 2)²
x² - 2x = - 6 + 4
(x - 2)² = - 2
x - 2 = ± 2i

Answer: x = 2 ± 2i—no real root [imaginary solutions only]
