Okay, here we have this:

We know that each square has an area of 16, this mean that each side measures 4 units.

Now, this mean that each circle will have a diameter of 4, according with this the radius is 2 units.

Now, let's find the area of each circle:

Area=pi*radius²=pi*2²=4pi

Finally we obtain the following formula:

Combined area of the excess=8(Square area)-8(circle area)

And replacing we obtain:

Combined area of the excess=8(16)-8(4pi)

Combined area of the excess=128-32pi

Combined area of the excess=32(4-pi)

Finally we obtain that the correct answer is the option D.
