Volunteer institutions to assist immigrants, the Hull House, Help US Immigrants learn US Customs and Language, and offer professional help, (doctors, teachers and such.)

the major purpose of settlement houses was to help to assimilate and ease the transition of immigrants into the labor force by teaching them american ways
~ so basicly the answer is the help newcomers learn English and adopt American dress and eating habbits
