Answer: McGuffey Reader
The Bible and the Hornbook were used in England as methods of education even before the settlement of the colonies. They were implemented in the colonies early on. The New England Primer was the first textbook widely used in the colonies. The McGuffey Readers, however, were not an example or early American textbooks. They were a series of primers used as textbooks from the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century. From 1836 to 1960, the series sold at least 120 million copies, making it as popular as the Bible and Webster's Dictionary.
