Gases take the shape and fill the volume of any container you put them in. Liquids take the shape at the bottom but they don't fill the volume of the jar.

Matters generally can exist in three states, these are solid, liquid and gas. Solids have definite shape and volume. Liquids have definite volume but have no shape. They take the shape of the containers in which they are put. Gases have no shape and no volume. Gases normally take the shape of the containers in which they are put and they also fill up the whole container.
