In the Missouri compromise, the United States government ruled that no more slave states could be made above the 32nd parallel, besides Missouri. This was an attempt by abolitionists to satiate the south’s desire to expand slavery but also limit the spread is slavery to land squired in the Louisiana purchase.

The Kansas-Nebraska Act made it so that Kansas and Nebraska would be allowed to hold a popular vote within their state on wether or not they wanted to be a slave state. This was passed with the idea that Nebraska would become a free state and the citizens of Kansas would become a slave state, but the citizens of Kansas voted to be a free state, causing great conflict between the citizens who owned slaves and abolitionists in the state.

The fugitive slave act allowed for the capture and return of any slave who escaped to the north from the south. This made it so that even if slaves escaped their master, there was no guarantee of freedom for them in America. This also helped promote a sense of hostility towards the police, as they were typically the ones catching and returning the runaway slaves.
