Why did the french believe the ohio river valley was rightfully their territory?

They feared they would cut down forests and hunt the trappers fur trade. To set aside land from West of the Appalachians, to the Mississippi for the Native Americans, otherwise known as the Ohio River Valley. Thank you for posting your question here. I hope the answer helps.
