That day marked the end of the second World War. A memorial was erected on this day, and it is now known as V day, or several other variations of that. The Nazis surrendered unconditionally, and thus the war ended.

Option 2: This was the end of world war II.

On May 8, 1945 Nazi Germany officially surrendered its armed forces, marking the victory of the Allies and the end of the World War II. Nowadays, the date is remembered and celebrated by many and called "Victory in Europe Day" or "V Day".

Upon the official surrender was announced, celebrations erupted around the world. British celebrated the victory in the streets of London, Trafalgar Square and up the Mall to Buckingham Palace. New Yorkers in America packed Times Square, and massive celebrations also took place in Chicago, Los Angeles and Miami.
