Audiences were from all levels of society. Audiences were excitable and responded loudly. Parts were acted only by men.
During this time period, audiences came from all levels of society. The lower class were allowed to stand in the "pit". It was an area right in front of the stage with no seating. Because of their close proximity to the stage and actors, people frequently yelled on to the stage and were excited by the action due to their closeness. Their responses also helped to energize or discourage the actors. This area eventually became the place for the orchestra later on. Also, during this era, women were not allowed to be actors. It was deemed as an inappropriate profession for women.
