In his book, Sinclair wrote about the harsh working conditions endured by the immigrants in the cities like Chicago and other smaller industrial cities. In an order to show the readers about the horror these people face while working in the fertilizer plant, he used the following three images:
1. The throbbing veins in the forehead of the workers.
2. Children, women, and men sawing the bones.
3. Dusty and suffocating working cellars.
