Solution

Step 1

The shaded sections represent the number of times he swam in the week

Hence the answer to part one is

1) 8 shaded sections of the 4 rectangle

Step 2

Hence it is 2 shaded sections out of 3 in each rectangle

Step 3

The total number of sections = 12

The total number of sections he swims in = 8

The total rectangles = 4

Hence an expression that can be used to solve this will be

\frac{total\text{ number of sections he swam}}{\text{Total sections}}*4

Hence the answer will be

\begin{gathered} (8)/(12)*4 \\ (2)/(3)*4 \end{gathered}

Step 4

The key states that 3 shaded sections = 1 mile

Hence 8 shaded sections in miles will be equivalent to (8/3)

orA

This then is equivalent to

(2)/(3)*4=(8)/(3)
