All matter that contain carbon are classified as organic compounds. In organic compounds, carbon usually form covalent bonds with the other elements in the compounds. The most common elements that are always found in combination with carbon are oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen. There are only a few carbon containing compounds that are not classified as organic compounds, these are carbides, cyanides and carbonates.
