What part did the growing expansion into the west play in such crucial issues of the period as the tariff, internal improvements, and the controversy over slavery?

Internal improvements were mostly about infrastructure and building roads and railroads towards the west. Slavery was an issue because of new states and whether or not they would be slave states. Industry with tariff was mostly found in the eastern parts but as western ones started developing so did the industry in those parts.
