A boat left a harbor and sailed 42 miles due north and then 35 miles due east. To the nearest mile, haw far away was the boat from the harbor?

In this case we can use the pythagorical theorem to find the distance so:


x^2=42^2+35^2

and we solve for x so:


\begin{gathered} x=√(1764+1225) \\ x=\sqrt[]{2989} \\ x=54.67 \end{gathered}

so he is at 54.67 miles
