A plantation economy existed in the southern region of the United States before the Civil War. This economy produced considerable profits; however, the success of this economy relied on slave labor. The slaves were treated in a inhumane manner, most being denied basic freedoms. The slaves got no compensation for working endlessly in the cotton fields. This allowed landowners to maximize profits.
