"Population density" refers to how many people there are in a given state per square mile of area.
Look at Wyoming. This state has a total population of 522,000 people, spread over an area of 97,818 square miles.
All you have to do is to divide 522,000 people by 97,818 square miles. Your final units of measurement must be "people per square mile."
