2. By 1831, the Cherokee appealed to the Supreme Court; the Supreme Court determined that they had the right to self-govern their land. However, President Andrew Jackson didn't agree with the decision and wouldn't enforce it.
3. The increasing popularity of their land as fertile grounds for resources caused the Cherokee to seek independence in order to retain their lands as a sovereign nation.
