Explain why the increase in phosphate levels caused a decrease in biodiversity

Because increasing phosphate levels increased acidity levels.  There are many species (especially fungi and amphibians) that are very sensitive to changes in pH.  So all the species that are sensitive to pH can't survive when there is an increase in pH.
