Plates are generally moving away from ocean ridges, and towards ocean trenches. Using the theory of plate tectonics we can see where the plates are going to probably move, and predict where volcanic and earthquake activity is going to occur.

Using the plate tectonics theory geologists can sometimes predict when a earthquake might happen. Hope this helps you.
