Explain why the verb ser is used in the following sentence:

"Ser" means "to be". "Soy" is the first person singular form of "ser", meaning "I am". It is used to describe yourself and a characteristic of yours that does not change-- "alta," meaning "tall."

By saying "Yo soy alta" you are saying "I am tall."
