(5p-3p^3) - (p^3-3p+5)

-4p^3+8p-5
the negative in front of the parenthesis, changes the signs inside the parenthesis, therefore changing it to (5p-3p^3-3^3+3p-5) then you combine like terms which is how you come up with -4p^3+8p-5
