The quotient of a number and 2 can be expressed as x / 2
The difference between 6 and the number can be expressed as 6 - x
therefore the answer is;
x / 2 = 6 - x

worked out it is
1/2x = -x + 6
1/2x + x = -x + 6 + x
3/2x = 6
3/2x * 2/3 = 6 * 2/3
x = 4
