Read the passage from "Captain Canot":

As I am now fairly embarked in a trade which absorbed so many of my most vigorous years, I suppose the reader will not be loth to learn a little of my experience in the alleged “cruelties” of this commerce.
What is the best question to ask to determine the author's viewpoint in this passage?

What is he doing after his "vigorous years"?

How many years was Captain Canot involved in slave trading?

What are some of the cruelties associated with slave trading?

Why does the speaker put "cruelties" in quotation marks?

The best question to ask is "Why does the speaker put "cruelties" in quotation marks?"

By placing the word "cruelty" in quotation marks, the author is implying the that the accusations against the slave trading commerce are not true. According to his experience thourghout the years i, the author wants to let the reader know about his insights on the slave trading commerce.
