Consider the expression 7 - 4y. Why would the co-efficient be -4 and not 4?

Answer:

because a co-efficient is the multiplicative factor in polynomials and it's minus 4 before the y. you would just take the minus and put it with the 4 otherwise it would just be floating there ig.
