The growth of the middle class usually comes with the reduction of poverty. As people move out of poverty, they begin to join the more comfortable middle class. This means that people have more money, as well as more liberty to spend their money in things that are not necessities. As people have more of this discretionary income, the industries that cater to these wants become larger and more complex. This includes entertainment. As the middle class grows, mass entertainment is more demanded, leading to its growth.

As more people move out of poverty and into the middle class, there is more discretionary income, which can be spent on entertainment. Mass entertainment is formed in response to the demands of the middle class, and then provides new industries which then create more jobs, moving more people into the middle class, to create more discretionary income. It's a nice circle
