3/8s + 27/8 = -19
3/8s = -19 - 27/8
3/8s = -152/8 - 27/8
3/8s = -179/8
3/8s / 3/8 = -179/8 / 3/8

S = -179/3

I believe this is the value for s.

You first multiply both sides by 8/3, then subtract 9 on both sides leaving you with the answer, which is -59.666666 repeating or -59 and 2/3.
