step 1

Find out the mean

mean=(18+11+5+6+10)/5

mean=50/5

mean=10

step 2

Find out the difference of each value with the mean, and square the result

so

(18-10)^2=8^2=64

(11-10)^2=1^2=1

(10-5)^2=5^2=25

(10-6)^2=4^2=16

(10-10)^2=0

step 3

Adds the values of step 2

(64+1+25+16+0)=106

step 4

Divide by (n-1)

where

n=5

so

sample variance=106/(5-1)=26.5

therefore

s^2=26.5

step 5

Find out the standard deviation

Find out the mean of the results in step 3

106/5=21.2

step 6

the standard deviation is the square root of the result in step 5

\text{standard deviation=}\sqrt[]{21.2}=4.6
