5+x+(-2)=-8=> 5 + x - 2 = -8
=> x = -8 - 5 + 2
=> x = -11

Hope it helps !!!

add like terms (5+(-2)) and you willl get 3+x= -8 and then you subtract 3 from x and from -8 and get x=-11
