The worldwide conflict that emerged after WWII because of this fact is known as Cold War. Although tensions were incredibly high, there was never a direct confrontation between the two powers.

While the US leaded a group of capitalist states (Western Bloc), the URSS exercised its control over communist countries and formed the Eastern Bloc.
