8 hours is the answer. All you have to do is add 40 to you profit of 24 and then divide 64 by 8 and the you get 8 hours.

Answer: 8 hours

Explanation:

Given: profit for mowing lawns this week is
\$24. You are paid
\$8 per hour and you paid
\$40 for gas for the lawn mower.

To Find: How many hours did you work this week.

Solution:

Total profit for mowing lawns this week
=\$24

Hourly payment for mowing lawn
=\$8

Amount paid for gas for lawn mower
=\$40

Let total hours in week we worked
=\text{x}

Now,

Total profit made
=\text{hourly payment} * \text{Total hours worked}-\text{Amount paid for gas}

\text{Total profit}=\text{x}*8-40

putting values,

24=8\text{x}-40

8\text{x}=64

\text{x}=(64)/(8)

\text{x}=8

Therefore we mowed lawns for
8
\text{hours} this week.
