The Province of Georgia was one of the southern colonies of British America, the last of the Thirteen Colonies established by the Kingdom of Great Britain and later part of the United States.

On April 21, 1732, the colonial charter was issued by George II to General James Oglethorpe. General Oglethorpe sought to establish a colony for English debtors and prisoners to came and start new lives there.

Another reason for the establishment of the colony was as a buffering country and a “staying province” to protect the British colonies in the south and prevent the threat of Western Florida. The ban on slavery was lifted in 1751, and the colony became a direct colony in the following year.
