The ionic compound sodium sulfide is Na2S. It has two atoms of Na and one atom of Sulfur. Sulfur is the anion and it has a charge of -2. In order to balance the charges, Na should have a charge of +2, but since there are two Na atoms in the compound, each Na cation has a charge of +1.
