Women were encouraged by society to get jobs that helped the war effort
In the civil war women were working as Red Cross
During world war 1 women were making bullets out of a lipstick factory

Women were forced to get jobs and provide for themselves because all of their husband were drafted off to war. Women were also encourage to become nurses over seas during the war
