3 1/6
-1 2/3 + 3 1/2
You add the base numbers first, -1 + 3 to get 2.
Then you add the fraction part of the number: 2/3 + 1/2
You find a common denominator, it's 6.
How do you get 2/3 with a denominator of 6? You multiply 3x2, to get six. what you do to the bottom of the fraction you do to the top. So you multiply both parts by 2.
2x2/3x2= 4/6
You do the same for the other fraction:How do you get the denominator to 6? You multiply by 3.
1x3/2x3= 3/6
Then you add the two new fractions together:
4/6+3/6=7/6 which is simplified into a mixed number as 1 1/6
Since we have another base number you add it to the previous base number we got when we added the mixed numbers. -1 and 3 to get 2. So you add the old base number of 2, to the new base number of 1 to get 3. Then you just put the fraction next to it to get your answer:
3 1/6
Hope it helps.
