The acts were designed by Federalists to limit the power of the opposition Republican Party, but enforcement ended after Thomas Jefferson was elected president in 1800. The Alien and Sedition Acts were passed by Congress in 1798 in preparation for an anticipated war with France.

Answer:

The Alien and Sedition Acts were laws passes by the congress in Federalist controlled areas in 1798. It was aimed for Republican party which was the choice of New Migrants . The reason for the passing of such laws was that there was a high probability of war between the US and France and there was fear that aliens who were in America could support the french. Four laws were passed to deal with such issues, the laws were known as Alien and Sedition Acts. The Alien act raised the number of years required for citizenship from 5 to 14. The sedition act prohibited to publish anything against the Government. Thus it can be said that the main reason behind these acts was to prevent any support for french from inside the US.
