y=1/2x-4
First, you use the inverse operation to add x to -x
2y-x=-8
+x +x
—————
2y=x-8
Next you divide 2 by both sides of the equation
2/2y=x-8/2
The twos on the left side of the equation cancel out and you simplify the rest of the problem...
y=x/2-4
