Draw a structural formula for 3-hexene (C6H12), which has a double bond between the number 3 and 4 carbons in the chain. What class of compound is it, and what feature distinguishes it as that class?

Answer: Alkene

Explanation: Structural formula for 3-hexene (C6H12)

CH_(3) CH_(2) CH= CH CH_(2) CH_(3)

We can start numbering from either of the ends as it is a symmetrical structure.

It exist as 2 geometrical isomers - cis isomers and trans isomers.

Cis Isomers are those which have higher priority groups on the same side and trans isomers is that on is higher priority groups are opposite to each other.

This comes under the category of hydrocarbon known as ALKENE.

This class can be distinguished as Alkene has at least 2 sp2 hybridized carbon atoms. It has a double bond between 2 carbon atom which have shorter bond lenght than the alkane.

CH3CH2CH=CHCH2CH3

What class of compound is it, and what feature distinguishes it as that class? The class is alkene and it is distinguished by its double bond.
