Gatsby is attracted to Daisy because of what she represents not because of who she is. She represent wealth and high status, neither of which Gatsby had. He tries to attract by throwing these luxurious parties rather than trying to talk to her in person even though he knew exactly where she lived. He loved the idea of her.
