You know that the ratio of pairs of mittens and pairs of gloves sold is 2 : 1 (for every 2 pairs of gloves mittens, they sell 1 pair of gloves)

You can also express this ratio saying that for every 3 pairs sold, 2 were mittens and 1 was a pair of gloves. This ratio can be expressed as fractions:

(2)/(3)and(1)/(3)

You know that combined they sold 27 pairs. To determine how many pairs were sold, you have to multiply the total number of pairs by the corresponding fractions:

- Pairs of mittens:

27\cdot(2)/(3)=18

-Pairs of gloves:

27\cdot(1)/(3)=9

Over the week they sold 18 pairs of mittens and 9 pairs of gloves.
