you need to subtract the 3. when you add a 3 you end up with 6. WHAT YOU DO TO ONE SIDE, YOU MUST DO TO THE OTHER.

2x+3=17
subtract 3 from both sides
2x=14
divide both sides by 2 and get
x=7
