You find the common denominator for 3/4 and 5/8, which would be 8. Then, the problem turns into 4 5/8 + 1 6/8. You would add them to get the final answer of
6 3/8

4 (5)/(8) +1 (3)/(4)
Put aside the whole numbers

(5)/(8) + (3)/(4)
You need to have a common denominator(bottom)

(3)/(4)×
(2)/(2)=
(6)/(8)
So
(5)/(8)+
(6)/(8)=
(11)/(8)
You then divide the numerator by the denominator
11÷8=1
(3)/(8)
Add that to the original whole numbers

1 (3)/(8) +4+1=6 (3)/(8)
There is another way to do this but I decided to do it this way.
