2x + y = -4 . . . (1)
5x + 3y = -6 . . (2)

From (1), y = 4 - 2x . . . (3)
Putting (3) into (2), gives
5x + 3(4 - 2x) = -6
5x + 12 - 6x = -6
-x = -6 - 12 = -18
x = 18

From (3), y = 4 - 2(18) = 4 - 36 = -32
