Matter made of two or more atoms is called a compound. Compounds are chemically combined elements, for example a compound of oxygen o^2/o^3 are not compounds of oxygen but instead a different form of the same element. Carbon monoxide has one oxygen atom per atom of carbon and is a new and separate compound.
